As a bishop in the Church, Newel had the job of helping the poor and needy. Joseph Smith gave him a blessing in 1835 that told him to be generous with them. If he was generous with the poor, Joseph said, the Lord would be generous with him. Newel served as a bishop until his death in 1850.
