“The family proclamation talks about the roles of fathers and mothers, but what about sons and daughters?,” For the Strength of Youth, Dec. 2021.
To the Point
The family proclamation talks about the roles of fathers and mothers, but what about sons and daughters?
Your role in your home as a son or daughter is important, but what is it, exactly?
Is it simply to “honour thy father and thy mother” (Exodus 20:12)? Well, that is an important commandment to keep. It means obeying, respecting, and following the righteous example of parents. Giving honor to them brings honor to you. You’ll grow in knowledge, experience, and character. And the Lord has promised you lifelong blessings if you do it.
But as important as this is, you shouldn’t think that it’s your only role in the home.
You can and should be an influence for good in your home. You too can set a righteous example—to your siblings and maybe even to your parents. You can be a peacemaker. You can keep the Sabbath day holy. You can study the scriptures enthusiastically. You can willingly do chores you were asked to do—or even ones you weren’t asked to do.
And one of your main jobs in your home is to learn and grow and try to become the best you that you can be.
