Where Do Tithing and Fast Offerings Go?
See what happens to your donations.
Have you ever wondered what happens to the tithing and fast offerings you give to the Church? Here’s a quick look at what happens and the good it does for people around you and throughout the world.
How to Give
You can submit your donation online at donations.ChurchofJesusChrist.org or give it to a member of your bishopric or branch presidency.
Tithing
You donate 10 percent of your income for tithing (see Doctrine and Covenants 119:3).
As guided by inspiration, the First Presidency, Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and Presiding Bishopric make decisions about how sacred tithing funds will be used, as directed by the Lord (see Doctrine and Covenants 120).
Among many things, tithing pays for …
-
Welfare and humanitarian efforts.
-
Missionary work.
-
Church education programs.
-
Family history research.
-
Constructing and maintaining temples, churches, and other buildings.
-
Scriptures and other materials.
Fast Offerings
Paying fast offerings is an opportunity to help our brothers and sisters in spiritual or temporal need. Here’s how they work:
For fast offerings, you donate the money you would have spent on food for two meals you missed while fasting.
Your donation is deposited in a bank account where funds are available according to the needs of your ward or branch members.
The bishop, Relief Society president, and other ward leaders prayerfully counsel together to determine the needs of members, and fast offerings can be used to help pay for groceries, rent, medical bills, or other aid.
