The Most Precious Gifts

In this season of gift giving, focus on the amazing gifts Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ give to you and what you, in return, can give to Them.

Gifts We’ve Been Given

The prophet Moroni reminds us that “every good gift” comes from Christ (Moroni 10:18). Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are the ultimate gift-givers! If we tried to make a list of every gift They have given us (like the air we breathe, the rain, the ability to sing and dance, and so on), the list could go on forever! Everything good in our lives comes from the Savior and Heavenly Father.

Here are just a few of Their gifts to us:

• Christ’s life, death, atoning sacrifice, and Resurrection (see John 3:16)

• The possibility for eternal life—“the greatest of all the gifts of God” (see John 10:28; Doctrine and Covenants 14:7)

• The Savior’s example (see John 13:15)

• Baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost (see 2 Nephi 31:12; John 14:16)

• The priesthood, or God’s authority and power on earth (see Moses 6:67; Matthew 10:1)

• God’s commandments (see John 13:34)

• Wisdom and knowledge (see James 1:5; 2 Nephi 28:30)

• Covenants and ordinances, like the sacrament and temple endowment (see Matthew 26:26–28; Doctrine and Covenants 124:39)

• Weakness—yep, that can be a gift too! (see Ether 12:27)

• Unique spiritual gifts (see Moroni 10:8)

These are just some of the many gifts that are mentioned in the scriptures, but there are lots more!

Challenge: Try to add to this list and see how long you can make it!

What Are Your Spiritual Gifts?

Did you know that we are each blessed with spiritual gifts? God gives spiritual gifts to those who love Him and keep His commandments—and those who strive to do so. Some of these gifts include faith, recognizing the Spirit, and speaking languages. (See Doctrine and Covenants 46:9–27.)

We can work on obtaining spiritual gifts throughout our lives! Want to discover and develop some of your spiritual gifts? Try this:

1. Think about what you are naturally good at or what you enjoy.

2. Ask God in prayer what gifts He has given you.

3. Ask your family members, close friends, or Church leaders what gifts they recognize in you.

4. Look for gifts in your patriarchal blessing if you’ve received one.

5. As you recognize your gifts, strive to develop them.

6. Use your gifts to bless others.

Gifts We Can Give

What can you give to someone who has already given you everything? The scriptures have some great ideas for gifts that you can give Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. (The scriptures also show us how They immediately bless us with more gifts when we give to Them.)

Gifts We Can Give to God	Gifts He Gives Us in Return
Keep the commandments.	God will bless you and prosper you. (See 1 Nephi 2:20; Mosiah 2:22.)
Deny yourself of all ungodliness and love God.	His grace will be sufficient for you. (See Moroni 10:32.)
Offer a broken heart and a contrite spirit.	You will be blessed with the Holy Ghost. (See 3 Nephi 9:20.)
Love those around you.	Others will know you are a disciple of Christ. (See John 13:34–35.)
Come unto Christ, take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him.	You will find rest for your soul. (See Matthew 11:28–29.)
Share the gospel with others.	Christ will be with you. (See Matthew 28:19–20.)

This Christmas, choose a gift that you can give the Savior and Heavenly Father. You can choose one to give from this list, find other ideas from the scriptures, or ask Heavenly Father for a specific and personal gift you can give. While your gift may not compare to Their gifts, your gift—if given with your heart—will still bring Them joy. As you do so, you can make this Christmas one to remember always!
