On the cover: Handcart Pioneers, by Carl Christian Anton Christensen (1831–1912), oil on canvas, 1900. This scene reflects the artist’s first-hand experiences. He and his new bride pulled a handcart from Iowa to Salt Lake City in 1857 when he was a sub-captain of the seventh handcart company. The painting includes a wealth of detail about pioneer travel including the technique of making fires with buffalo chips.
