Family Home Evening Ideas
These ideas can be used for classroom teaching as well as in the home.
“Reverencing the Temple,”p. 10: Display a picture of a temple, and share the four great blessings of the temple as explained by President Groenewald. Discuss what can be done to prepare to receive temple blessings. Have each family member share a goal that will help him or her attend the temple.
“The Good Samaritan: Forgotten Symbols,” p. 26: Explain that a parable uses earthly objects and experiences to teach divine truths. Review the parable of the good Samaritan, and explain the additional meanings Brother Welch describes. Ask family members: How has Jesus Christ come to your aid? How has the Church taken care of you? How can you go and do likewise?
“Ten Axioms to Guide Your Life,” p. 34: Prepare slips of paper with the 10 axioms written on them, and pass them out. Have different family members read an axiom and discuss how it is a rule for life. Ask family members if they have any axioms they could add to the list. End by reading the last four paragraphs of the article.
“Sustaining Bishop Sheets,” p. F12: Have a family member stand with arms out. Gradually add weight to each hand (by piling books, for instance, on the hands). Have other family members help hold up the arms as the weight increases. Ask what it means to sustain someone. Read the story while family members listen to see how Sheila sustained her bishop. List ways your family can sustain your bishop or branch president. As a family, make something (perhaps cookies or a thank-you note) to take to your bishop or branch president.
