Family Home Evening Ideas

These teaching suggestions can be used in the classroom as well as in the home. You may tailor these ideas to your family or class.

“Finding My Faith,” p. 8: Discuss what a testimony is. Tell Joshua’s story. Read Ether 12:6, and ask what this scripture meant to him. How is our faith tested in order for our testimonies to grow? How did Joshua increase his faith after he was baptized? Invite family members to share their testimonies.

“18 Ways to Stand Strong,” p. 25: This article could be used for several family home evenings. Write the 18 standards on strips of paper. Draw a slip, and read that section of the article. Discuss how the standard applies to your family. Then draw another, continuing the process as long as desired. Emphasize how important these guidelines are for life. Make a goal to follow the counsel given for each. End by reading the section “Go Forward with Faith.”

“Be Wary of Wooden Horses,” p. 38: Satan has disguised many wooden horses in our day. Read the story of the Trojan horse from the article, and consider going through the books, music, and movies in your home. Make it a game titled “Can This Be Saved?” Keep only the media that is virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy (see Articles of Faith 1:13). Conclude by reading Mosiah 5:15 and Doctrine and Covenants 45:32.

“Help and Be Happy,” p. F10: Take this opportunity to introduce or continue a chore chart for your family. List several chores (appropriate to the ages of the children), and ask each person to choose one to do. Read the story, and discuss why it is important for each person to help. Make a goal to serve others during the coming week.

“Preparing for a Mission,” p. F14: Ask your family to listen for ways Elder Ulisses Soares prepared for his mission. Read the counsel he was given by his bishop. Discuss how each family member can prepare to be a missionary.
