Family Home Evening Ideas

These teaching suggestions can be used in the classroom as well as in the home. You may tailor these ideas to your family or class.

“What Does the Atonement Mean to You?” p. 14: Invite family members to share everything they know about Nephi. Ask why they think he was happy even though he experienced difficult trials (see 2 Nephi 5:27). Summarize the section “Happiness through the Atonement.” Discuss how Nephi handled his problems and how his approach can apply to your family. Conclude by reading the last two paragraphs of the article.

“Learning and Latter-day Saints,” p. 26: In advance, read the article and select the paragraphs that will have the greatest meaning to your family. Ask family members to read the selected paragraphs and discuss what they have read. Conclude by reading the last two paragraphs of the article.

“The Promises of a Prophet,” p. F6: After reading the article, have family members randomly open their scriptures and try reading a verse upside down. Discuss how reading scriptures regularly can bless each member of the family. Reread the promise given by President Ezra Taft Benson (see the beginning of the article), and set a goal to continue reading the scriptures together regularly.

“Excited to Learn,” p. F12: Invite the children to take turns acting out a profession without speaking, and have others guess what it is. Discuss what family members would need to learn in order to work in that profession. Read the story. Identify the things that Russell needed to know before he could learn about dinosaurs. Conclude by reading Doctrine and Covenants 88:118.
