How Does God Direct Me to Do His Work?

When we read the story of Saul’s conversion, we’re inspired by his response to the Savior: “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” (Acts 9:6). As disciples of Jesus Christ, we often ask a similar question as we seek to participate in the Lord’s work.
But what happens after we ask the question? How do we receive direction to know God’s will for our labors?
Willing to Act
In answer to Saul’s question about what he should do, the Lord immediately responded with instructions for him to go to Damascus. Sometimes we hope the Lord will give us the same kind of specific guidance. But we don’t have to wait for step-by-step instructions before we participate in God’s work.
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught, “Often, the answer to our prayer does not come while we’re on our knees but while we’re on our feet serving the Lord and serving those around us” (“Waiting on the Road to Damascus,” Liahona, May 2011, 76).
Consider how the Lord led both of these people to service opportunities because they were willing to act:
