Bishop Thanks Supermarket and the People of Chesterfield
Members, missionaries and friends of the Chesterfield Ward in the Sheffield England Stake have been inspired by the generosity and kindness of the people of Chesterfield throughout the Poppy Appeal.
Since 2013, Church members have collected for the Poppy Appeal at Tesco Extra on Lockoford Lane, typically raising around £10,000. In 2023, 38 people donated over 300 hours—12 hours a day throughout the appeal.
Bishop John Mace said, “We are all so grateful to Tesco for this wonderful collection venue, and so much kindness and generosity of the people of Chesterfield for the Poppy Appeal. We were all inspired every day of the appeal by the quantity and value of donations. Thank you to everyone involved and every penny donated to the Poppy Appeal.
“The Poppy Appeal is important to Church members because those who sacrificed their lives in conflict preserved our freedom to worship as we choose.”
In recognition of Tesco‘s support for the appeal since Church members‘ involvement in 2013, Community Champions Jane Clavin and Karen Pearson were asked to lay the Church wreath at the Chesterfield Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday. Jane and Karen kept the appeal going throughout the COVID-19 years, and have been supportive in many ways to many charitable activities.
