Doctrinal Mastery Review 4

Apply Doctrinal Mastery Scripture Passages

copies of the Book of Mormon

We apply the scriptures in our lives by using the doctrine and principles they contain to help us become more like Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. This lesson is intended to help you apply the doctrine taught in various Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passages.

Encouraging students to practice gospel living. When students apply the gospel in their day-to-day living, they are more likely to have long-lasting and deep spiritual growth. Share examples of how you have applied gospel truths and the blessings that resulted. Regularly invite students to apply truths in their own lives.

Student preparation: Invite students to prepare to share a favorite scripture passage and tell why it is one of their favorites. You could ask them to include how it applies to their lives. It may be helpful to ask a few students to come prepared to share.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by your area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught when seminary is in session.

Does it make a difference?

Consider beginning class by sharing one of your favorite scripture passages. Then ask students the following questions:

  • Do you have a favorite scripture passage? Why did it become a favorite?

Often, passages that mean the most to us are those we apply to our own lives. For example, they could answer a difficult question, bring us peace in a challenging time, or help build our testimony.

Read the following statement from President Russell M. Nelson or watch “President Nelson—The Scriptures Teach Us about Jesus Christ” (0:59), available on ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

0:59

We can go to the scriptures. They teach us about Jesus Christ and His gospel, the magnitude of His Atonement, and our Father’s great plan of happiness and redemption. Daily immersion in the word of God is crucial for spiritual survival, especially in these days of increasing upheaval. As we feast on the words of Christ daily, the words of Christ will tell us how to respond to difficulties we never thought we would face. (President Russell M. Nelson, “Hear Him,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2020, 89)

  • What stood out to you from President Nelson’s statement?

Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery references and key scripture phrases

Applying the scriptures means we identify the scripture passages that match our needs, then take action on what those passages teach us. To help you understand this process, read the following scenarios:

Instead of using the following scenarios, consider putting students into small groups. Ask them to write on a piece of paper two to three problems or challenges common to youth. Then invite students to trade their paper with another group.

  • Guillermo has a difficult decision to make and he’s afraid he might make the wrong choice.

  • Maggie is struggling to keep a certain commandment.

Read the following Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery references and key scripture phrases. Look for those you think could apply to Guillermo or Maggie. If you think a certain passage may help, be sure to read the entire passage and not just the key scripture phrase listed below.

If students exchanged papers with another group, they could search the following chart for passages that would help someone who faces the problems or challenges they received. Consider displaying the chart as students work on this activity.

How can the scriptures help?

If students exchanged papers, rather than asking the following questions, invite them to share the passages they found with the group they exchanged papers with.

  • What doctrinal mastery passages could help Guillermo or Maggie? Why?

  • What might Guillermo and Maggie do because of truths taught in these verses?

As students share, emphasize that there is not just one correct answer; many scriptures can help in different ways.

Applying scriptures to our lives

Ponder what needs or challenges you have. Perhaps you need help with school, an improved relationship with your parents or siblings, more faith in Christ to repent, or patience. Create a list of your difficulties or challenges in your study journal. Try to include anything that comes to mind.

Select one of the needs or challenges you wrote.

Read through the doctrinal mastery key scripture phrases and identify those that might address your needs, difficulties, or challenges. Many doctrinal mastery passages may help. Seek Heavenly Father’s guidance as you study.

The following prompts or similar statements might help students. You could write the prompts on the board for students to pick which they could use.

  • Which doctrinal mastery key scripture phrases did you choose?

    1. This verse can help me with my challenges by …

    2. This verse helps me understand or follow Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ by …

    3. I believe that living the truths in these verses can bring me happiness because …

Conclude by thanking students for their comments, especially those who shared their meaningful verses at the beginning of class.
