Doctrinal Mastery Review 13

Locate and Mark Alma 7:11–13 through Moroni 10:4–5

young woman marking scriptures

One purpose of doctrinal mastery is to help you come unto Christ by increasing your understanding of gospel truths found in the scriptures. This lesson is intended to help you locate the 12 doctrinal mastery scripture passages in the second half of the Book of Mormon.

Creating an environment of belonging. Giving students opportunities to learn more about one another can help create an environment of acceptance and belonging. Look for occasions when students can share appropriate information about their lives with one another.

Student preparation: Invite students to ask friends or family members to show them different ways they mark scripture passages and why.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught when seminary is in session.

Scripture references and key scripture phrases

If needed, before inviting students to respond to the following scenario, remind them that marking scriptures is not disrespectful nor is it mandatory and that there is not a right or wrong way to do it. The important thing is to strive to locate, learn, and remember what the scriptures teach.

Imagine that a younger sibling notices you marking your scriptures as you study. After seeing the page with all the markings on it, your younger sibling asks you why you mark your scriptures.

  • How would you respond?

Consider inviting students to share in small groups some different ways they mark their scriptures and why. Help students understand that marking scripture passages can help make the scriptures personal, emphasize meaningful insights, and make it easier to locate passages again in the future.

Consider inviting students to work with a partner. Assign each partnership to prepare to introduce at least one doctrinal mastery passage to the class. Make sure that all 12 passages are assigned out. After giving them time to prepare, invite each partnership to do the following:

  1. Introduce their partner to the rest of the class by sharing something interesting or important about each other

  2. Introduce their doctrinal mastery passage to the class by:

    • Encouraging students to turn to the passage and consider marking it

    • Reading the entire passage to the class and pointing out the key scripture phrase

    • Explaining why understanding the truth in the key scripture phrase is important for youth today

After all students have shared, students could use any remaining time in class to begin memorizing references and key scripture phrases. They might want to use the Doctrinal Mastery mobile app to help them (if available).
