Memorize References and Key Scripture Phrases

Remembering scripture references and what is taught in them can help you in many ways. This lesson is intended to help you memorize multiple scripture references and key scripture phrases from the final 12 doctrinal mastery passages in the Book of Mormon.

Memorizing scripture passages. When the words of scriptures are memorized, they naturally add power as we teach others. The work required to memorize the scriptures can also help students better understand the meaning of the truths and doctrine the passages contain. Help students practice memorizing some or all of the doctrinal mastery scripture passages.

Student preparation: Invite students to select and memorize a doctrinal mastery passage that could help them feel close to the Savior or help them with a current need.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught when seminary is in session.

Select three or four doctrinal mastery passages from the second half of the Book of Mormon to focus on in this lesson. Students will be given opportunities to focus on the other passages in different lessons.

On separate pieces of paper, create the following suggestions for the doctrinal mastery passages students will focus on in this lesson. Create a learning station for each activity or scripture passage. This can be done by attaching the papers to the wall or placing them in a section of the classroom. Students could also work on these exercises in pairs and pass off the passages with one another.

1. Write each scripture reference and key scripture phrase, leaving out a few words or numbers. Students will fill in the missing words or numbers.

2. Write down the first letters for each word of the scripture reference and key scripture phrase.

3. Write the words and numbers of the reference and key scripture phrase in a random order. Invite students to write the correct reference and scripture phrase on a separate piece of paper or in their study journal.

4. Students can use the flash card feature on the Doctrinal Mastery app. Students could also select an entire passage to memorize and use the app to help them.

Invite students to rotate through the stations and complete all the activities for a specific scripture passage. After practicing one passage, students can repeat the process for other passages. Repeat as many times as desired.

After students finish, invite a few volunteers to repeat the references and key scripture phrases they memorized. They could also share which memorization technique helped them the most. Invite students to continue to memorize the doctrinal mastery passages.
