Lehi and Sariah’s family traveled in the wilderness. In a dream, the Lord told Lehi about the scriptures written on brass plates. A man named Laban had them in Jerusalem. The Lord said Lehi’s family needed to take the brass plates with them on their journey.

1 Nephi 3:1–3, 19–20

The Lord told Lehi to send his sons back to Jerusalem to get the brass plates. Nephi’s brothers complained. They told Lehi it was a hard thing to do. They did not want to go.

It was a very hard thing to do, but Nephi wanted to obey. He knew the Lord would help him and his brothers. Nephi told Lehi that he would go back to Jerusalem and get the brass plates.

Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi went back to Jerusalem. When they got there, they decided that Laman would go to Laban’s house and ask for the brass plates.

When Laman asked for the brass plates, Laban called him a robber. Laban said he would kill Laman.

Laman ran away and told his brothers what happened.

The four brothers were sad. Laman, Lemuel, and Sam wanted to go back to their parents in the wilderness, but Nephi had an idea. He said they could make a trade with Laban to get the brass plates. They went back to their home in the city and got all their gold and silver to trade.

When they showed the gold and silver to Laban, he wanted all of it. But he still would not give them the brass plates. Instead, he told his servants to kill the brothers so he could take their gold and silver.

The four brothers ran for their lives and left their gold and silver behind. Laban’s servants could not catch them. The brothers hid in a cave.

After all these hard things, Laman and Lemuel were mad at Nephi. They hit Nephi and Sam with a stick.

Suddenly, an angel came and asked why they were hitting Nephi. The angel said that Nephi was chosen to lead them. The angel told them to go back to Jerusalem. The Lord would prepare a way for them to get the brass plates.
