Teancum
Protecting his people
Teancum was a leader in Captain Moroni’s army. He was trying to keep the Nephite cities safe from the Lamanites.
Amalickiah was a Nephite who became the Lamanite king. He wanted to rule over the Nephites too. He attacked the Nephites and took over many cities.
Alma 47:1, 35; 48:1–4; 51:23–28
Teancum’s army went to stop Amalickiah’s army from attacking Nephite cities.
The armies fought for the whole day. Teancum and his army fought with more strength and skill than Amalickiah’s army. But neither army won. When it became dark, both armies stopped fighting so that they could rest.
Alma 51:31—32
But Teancum did not rest. He and his servant secretly went to Amalickiah’s camp.
Teancum sneaked into Amalickiah’s tent. He killed Amalickiah before Amalickiah could wake up. Then Teancum went back to his camp and told his soldiers to be ready to fight.
When the Lamanites woke up, they found that Amalickiah was dead. They also saw that Teancum and his army were ready to fight them.
The Lamanites were afraid and ran away. Teancum’s plan had made the Lamanites too scared to attack more Nephite cities. Teancum now had time to make the Nephite cities safer. He worked hard to protect his people. He was able to keep many Nephite cities safe.
