Jesus Visits the People

Helping each person believe in Him

a family looks at the sky, and other people in the city argue

Many of the people would not listen to the prophets of God. But some people believed what the prophets taught. These believers waited for the signs of Jesus Christ’s death.

3 Nephi 7:16–26; 8:1–4

lightning, storms, floods, earthquakes, and fires destroy a city

After Jesus died in Jerusalem, the signs began. In the Americas, there were storms, earthquakes, and fires for three hours. Cities were destroyed, and many people died. Then there was total darkness for three days.

3 Nephi 8:5–19, 23

someone tries to light a fire, but it does not light and everything is dark

The darkness was so thick that the people could not see the sun, moon, or stars. They could not even light fires or candles.

3 Nephi 8:20–23

it is still dark, people help each other through a broken building, and a person cries and prays

Many of the people who were still alive were very sad and scared. They cried and felt sorry that they had not repented sooner.

3 Nephi 8:24–25

it is still dark, people look at the sky, and the person praying has stopped crying

Suddenly, they heard a voice. It was Jesus speaking to them. He promised to heal everyone who repented. Jesus told them He had died and come back to life to help all people. The people were so amazed that they stopped crying. There was silence in the land for many hours.

3 Nephi 9; 10:1–2

families sit in circles and smile, and it is not dark anymore

Jesus spoke again. He told the people He would help them if they chose to follow Him. The darkness left, and the earth stopped shaking. The people were happy and praised Jesus.

3 Nephi 10:3–10

a large group of people gather around the temple, and they look up at the sky as dark clouds begin to show light

About one year later, many people came to the temple in the land Bountiful. They talked about Jesus and the signs of His death. As they talked, they heard a quiet voice from heaven. At first, they could not understand it. Then they heard it again.

3 Nephi 8:5; 10:18; 11:1–4

Jesus Christ descends from the sky, and the people are happy and welcome Him

When they heard the voice a third time, they looked toward heaven. It was Heavenly Father speaking. He told the people to see and listen to His Son. Then the people saw a man in a white robe coming down from heaven.

3 Nephi 11:5–8

Jesus Christ stands among the people, and the people come to Him and touch the nail marks in His palms

The man stood among the people and said, “I am Jesus Christ.” The people fell to the ground. Jesus told them He had suffered and died for everyone. He invited the people to touch the marks in His hands, feet, and side so that they could know He is the Savior of the world.

3 Nephi 11:8–14

Jesus Christ sits on the temple steps, and the people come to Him and touch the nail marks in His palms

The people came to Jesus one by one. They saw with their own eyes and felt with their own hands the marks in His hands, feet, and side. They all knew that He is the one the prophets said would come. They knew He is the Savior of the world. The people fell at the feet of Jesus and worshipped Him.
