“I Am He That Comforteth You”

Introduction and Impressions

As one of God’s covenant people, I can sometimes feel isolated in a world where many people do not value covenants made with God. The prophet Jacob taught his people that they were part of God’s covenant people even though they were isolated from the rest of the house of Israel. Jacob taught that God will never forget His covenant people, and he taught that the most important part of this covenant is the promise of redemption through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Record Impressions

It is very important that you seek impressions from the Spirit to help you and your family. Therefore, before reading the rest of this study outline, read 2 Nephi 6–10. What messages do you find for your life? What will be of most value to you and your family? What can you share in your Church classes? Record your thoughts and impressions below or in a journal or notebook.

Ideas for Personal Learning

2 Nephi 6:8–13. The Lord fulfills His promises.

Jacob taught about the promises given to God’s covenant people (see 2 Nephi 6:8–13). What can I learn from these verses, and from others in this chapter, about the importance the Lord places on covenants? What teachings inspire me to be true to the covenants I have made? What have latter-day prophets taught me about staying true to my covenants?

2 Nephi 9:14–17, 40–49. The Final Judgment can be a glorious day.

As I imagine myself standing before God on Judgment Day, how do I think I might feel? As I read 2 Nephi 9:14–17, 40–49, what does the Spirit tell me I need to do to prepare so that it will be a “glorious day”? (verse 46). What additional insights into the Final Judgment do I find in Doctrine and Covenants 45:3–5?

2 Nephi 9:28–30, 50–51. I should value the things of God.

In 2 Nephi 9:28–30, Jacob warns about the danger of relying on our own wisdom and setting our hearts on worldly things. Instead, we should seek after the true riches that God offers (see 2 Nephi 9:50–51). As I read these verses, what does the Spirit teach me about my personal desires? What can I do to value the things of God more and the things of the world less?

Ideas for Family Learning

Family Discussions

2 Nephi 7:8–9. How can we “stand together” with the Lord against opposition? How has the Lord helped us when we needed Him?

2 Nephi 9:17–21. What attributes of Jesus Christ can we find in these verses? How do these attributes increase our faith in Him?

2 Nephi 9:27–38, 50–51. As we consider Jacob’s teachings about the Savior in these verses, what do we learn about overcoming the dangers Jacob warns of?

Family Home Evening

2 Nephi 9:3–26. What does the Savior’s Atonement make possible for us?

Jacob taught that the Savior’s Atonement “must needs be … infinite”; therefore, Christ suffered for all “men, women, and children” (2 Nephi 9:7, 21). What could we do to begin to sense the magnitude of the infinite Atonement? Perhaps we could look at or think about blades of grass in a field, grains of sand on a beach, or stars in the sky. What phrases in 2 Nephi 9 show what the Atonement makes possible for us? Family members could share how they feel about Jesus Christ and His Atonement.
