Preparing to Teach in Sunday School

Begin your preparation to teach by reading 1 Nephi 1–7 before studying any supplemental material. Prepare your teaching plan, and record your thoughts and impressions. You might also use some of the ideas on the next page or in Come, Follow Me for individuals and families.

Encourage Sharing

  • How can you encourage class members to share insights they had as they studied these scriptures individually and with their families?

  • What experiences have class members had as they acted on what they learned?

Teach the Doctrine

  • As you teach gospel principles from these scriptures, what verses, quotations, experiences, questions, and other materials might you share?

  • How might you use these resources to help class members ponder the gospel principles?

  • How can you encourage class members to record and act upon the impressions they receive?

Encourage Sharing and Learning at Home

  • Ask class members to study 1 Nephi 8–11 and 15 during the coming week and look for two great visions about God’s plan for His children. What verses can you share to motivate them to read these chapters?

Additional Ideas

1 Nephi 2:11–21; 3:4–7, 28–31. We need our own testimonies.

  • What can we share from our reading that taught us the importance of developing our own testimonies?

  • Our choices can affect the strength of our testimonies. To illustrate this, you could create a chart with two columns, one labeled for Laman and Lemuel and the other for Nephi and Sam. Some class members could search 1 Nephi 2:11–21; 3:4–7, 28–31, looking for phrases that describe how Laman and Lemuel reacted to Lehi’s vision. Other class members could search these verses for phrases that describe how Nephi and Sam reacted to the vision. Individuals could write these phrases on the board and then discuss what they noticed. What prevented Laman and Lemuel from having the same confirmation that Nephi and Sam had? What obstacles do we sometimes face as we strive to gain and maintain a testimony? How do our testimonies affect our individual journeys to our “land of promise”?

1 Nephi 3–4. God will prepare a way for us to do His will.

  • What did we learn from our study this week about the importance of obeying God’s commandments? What are some ways we can teach others, including our families, about obedience?

  • What experiences have we had with following God’s will even when doing so was difficult? What verses from 1 Nephi 3–4 teach us how God prepares the way? Class members could share, in groups, pairs, or as a class, how they have seen God preparing a way for them when they have followed His will. What do we learn from Nephi’s and Lehi’s examples of obedience? (See also Proverbs 3:5–6.)

1 Nephi 5:10–22. The scriptures are “of great worth.”

  • What are some of the ways we can show the Lord that we value the scriptures? As a class, we could share our experiences with how we study the scriptures, individually and with our families.

  • One goal of Sunday School classes is to encourage individuals and families to study the gospel. These chapters contain powerful teachings about the importance of the word of God. Discussing these teachings can help each of us lay a foundation for understanding why and how to study the Book of Mormon this year. What teachings do we find in 1 Nephi 1–6 that describe what the scriptures contain, why we should search them, and the blessings we will receive as we search them? Class members could make a list on the board of these teachings and the verses in which they are found (see, for example, 1 Nephi 6:4). How can we encourage each other to continue with the goals we have set to study the scriptures individually and with our families?

Optional Resource

Hymn: “As I Search the Holy Scriptures” (Hymns, no. 277)

Consider inviting class members to read the words of this hymn and choose a verse that conveys a truth that they have personally experienced through their study of the scriptures. A few class members could share the verse that they chose and share their testimony of what it teaches. The class could then sing the hymn.
