Luke 22; John 18

Luke 22; John 18

Overview

As part of His Atonement, Jesus Christ went to the Garden of Gethsemane and experienced incomprehensible suffering while taking upon Himself the sins and afflictions of all humankind. He was then betrayed, arrested, and brought before the Sanhedrin (the Jewish court of law), where He was falsely accused, mocked, and beaten.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

Luke 22:28–34, 54–61

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students recognize their need to rely on Jesus Christ and continually strengthen their faith in Him.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to come prepared to share an experience that helped increase their faith in Jesus Christ.

  • Video:Foundations of Faith” (4:14; watch from time code 0:00 to 1:33)

  • Image: Prepare to display an image of Peter denying Christ.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider inviting students to use the chat feature throughout the lesson to answer questions that can be answered with one word or phrase. For example, students could list one skill or ability that could be lost if it is not continually used or strengthened. Using the chat feature is an easy way to involve many students. It also reduces the amount of time you spend talking during class, which leaves more time for questions that allow students to share experiences and testimony.

Matthew 26:36–46; Luke 22:39–46, Part 1

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students understand details about what the Savior suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane and how it was an act of love for them.

  • Student preparation: Invite the students to do something that helps them ponder Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Examples could be reviewing a hymn, reflecting on an image of Jesus Christ, reading a scripture passage, or something else.

  • Image: Prepare to display an image of the Garden of Gethsemane.

  • Videos:What Has Our Savior Done for Us?” (12:44; watch from time code 0:00 to 0:34); “The Savior Suffers in Gethsemane” (8:32; watch from time code 0:00 to 5:55); “Abide in My Love” (15:08; watch from time code 11:33 to 14:03)

  • Chart: Display a copy of the chart included in the lesson.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Play a hymn about the Atonement of Jesus Christ, such as “I Stand All Amazed” or “Thy Will, O Lord, Be Done” (Hymns, nos. 193, 188). While the song plays, invite students to use their phones to read the lyrics of the hymn, or display the lyrics on the screen for students to read.

Matthew 26:36–46; Luke 22:39–46, Part 2

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students feel a greater need for the strength and help Jesus Christ can offer them through His Atonement.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to think about how Jesus Christ can bless them because of His Atonement.

  • Chart: Display a copy of the chart included in the lesson.

  • Videos:Atonement—Not a One-Time Thing” (3:00); “Alek’s Story” (6:26)

Luke 22:47–71; John 18:1–27

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students follow Jesus Christ’s example by choosing Heavenly Father’s will in their lives.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to think of a time when they chose to do what Heavenly Father wanted instead of a personal preference. Ask students to think about what was difficult and why they made the choice.

  • Images: Various images of Jesus being bound, being scourged, carrying His cross, and being crucified

  • Videos:The Savior Suffers in Gethsemane” (8:30; watch from time code 5:55 to 8:30); “Jesus Is Tried by Caiaphas, Peter Denies Knowing Him” (4:24; watch from time code 0:00 to 1:39); “Let God Prevail” (18:51; watch from time code 12:17 to 13:01)

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Prior to class, students could be invited to search for examples from the Savior’s life that demonstrate His desire to do Heavenly Father’s will. Those students could be invited to share what they found after identifying the bolded truth in the lesson.

Doctrinal Mastery Review 10

Lesson purpose: This lesson will give students opportunities to practice applying some of the doctrinal mastery passages they have studied so far this year.

Note:A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to review the four doctrinal mastery passages shown in the chart included in the lesson. Ask them to be prepared to share some specific ways they could apply the truths in these passages.

  • Chart: Display a chart of the doctrinal mastery passages and their key scripture phrases.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider inviting ward or full-time missionaries from your area to join the videoconference and provide several “real-life” experiences that students could use to practice applying doctrinal mastery passages instead of using the scenarios provided in the lesson.
