Matthew 13; Luke 8; 13

Overview

During this week, you will have an opportunity to study some of the Savior’s parables, including the parable of the sower and the parable of the wheat and the tares. Studying the Savior’s parables can help you learn spiritual truths and gain a greater love for Jesus Christ.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

Matthew 13

Lesson purpose: This lesson will give students opportunities to study parables, to discover their spiritual meaning, and to look for ways to act on what they learn.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to assess their ability to understand the Lord’s parables. Students could read Matthew 13:44–48 and rate their confidence in their ability to draw spiritual lessons from these short parables.

  • Image: Prepare to display a picture with hidden images.

Matthew 13:3–8, 18–23

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students prepare their hearts to receive and nurture the word of God.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider giving students an opportunity to share their drawings with their classmates. This could be done in breakout rooms.

Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students increase their desire to participate in the gathering of Israel.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to come prepared to discuss these questions: Who was one of the first people in your family to join the Church? What do you know about their story? Students could discuss these questions with a family member.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: For the questions at the beginning of the lesson, consider inviting the students to use the chat feature to share their answers. Then give students time to read their peers’ responses. Some students could identify a response they want to hear more about.

Doctrinal Mastery Review 4

Lesson purpose: This lesson will give students opportunities to practice applying doctrinal mastery scripture passages to scenarios similar to ones they may encounter in their own lives.

Note: A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to ponder ways they have applied in their lives any of the truths taught in any of the doctrinal mastery scripture passages they have studied so far this year.

  • Supplies: Write the scripture references for the doctrinal mastery passages being used in this lesson on pieces of paper (one scripture reference per paper). Hang up the papers around the room.

Assess Your Learning 3

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students evaluate the goals they have set and the learning and personal growth they have experienced from their study of the New Testament so far this year.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to study Matthew 11:16–19 and to be prepared to demonstrate a scripture study skill they might use to better understand these verses. It may be helpful to list a few skills like linking or cross-referencing, using the study helps, or understanding symbols and metaphors to refresh students’ memory of some of the skills they have been taught.

  • Image: Prepare to display the diagram from the lesson.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Students could be invited to share their screens and show an example of how they implemented a scripture study skill in their digital scriptures.
