Matthew 14; Mark 6; John 5–6
Overview
The Savior fed five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fishes. Many responded by seeking Him for more food. Jesus walked on water to the disciples’ boat during a storm. He invited Peter to walk on water as well and saved Peter from sinking after he doubted. The Savior taught the sermon of the Bread of Life. He asked His disciples if they would leave Him, as some followers had already done. Peter testified that Jesus has the words of eternal life.
Prepare to Teach
The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.
Matthew 14:13–23; John 6:5–14
Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students be more compassionate and selfless like Jesus Christ. It can also help them gain greater confidence that because of Jesus Christ their humble offerings will be enough.
-
Student preparation: Invite students to pray for and seek an opportunity to serve someone before the next class. Encourage them to pay attention to how they feel as they serve.
-
Videos: “Doing Something for Someone Else Changed Me” (3:14); “Becoming True Millennials” (time code 9:05 to 12:28)
-
Handout: Prepare before class the handout with the two different scenarios.

Matthew 14:22–33
Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students follow Peter’s example of turning to the Savior during fearful or overwhelming situations.
-
Student preparation: Invite students to ponder the following questions from Come, Follow Me: “What could have inspired Peter to leave the safety of his boat in the middle of the Sea of Galilee during a boisterous storm? What led him to believe that if Jesus could walk on water, he could too?” (“March 27–April 2. Matthew 14; Mark 6; John 5–6: ‘Be Not Afraid,’” Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families: New Testament 2023).
