Romans 1–6

Overview

Addressing the Saints living in Rome, Paul declared that he was “not ashamed of the gospel of Christ” (Romans 1:16). Both Jewish and gentile converts needed help understanding their reliance on Jesus Christ and how to accept the blessings of His Atonement into their lives. Paul sought to help the Roman Saints understand Christ’s grace by teaching about its connection to faith and works. He taught that we gain access to the Savior’s power as we make and keep covenants with Him, “[walking] in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

Romans 1

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students not be ashamed to be known as disciples of Jesus Christ.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider presenting the quiz by displaying it for students and allowing them to either highlight the answers they think are correct or write the letters of their selected answers in the chat. Answers could then be discussed one by one as the quiz is taken or as the topics come up in the lesson.

Romans 2–3

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students better understand the need we all have to be forgiven of our sins and justified through Jesus Christ.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to read the definitions in Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families from the lesson on Romans 1–6 and be prepared to share in their own words definitions for words like justification, faith, and grace.

  • Content to display: The definitions of justification, faith, the law, and grace

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Invite a student to use the whiteboard function and illustrate the suggested drawing for the entire class.

Romans 4–5

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students increase their understanding of and appreciation for the grace of Jesus Christ.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to read the section “Grace” in either the Bible Dictionary or the Guide to the Scriptures, then identify one way they have received God’s grace in their own lives.

  • Content to display: The diagram of the stick figure in the desert and the accompanying text

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Students could be organized into breakout rooms to discuss the diagram. Be sure to provide clear instructions so that students know what they are seeking to accomplish. It may be helpful to display the three discussion questions for students to discuss in breakout rooms.

Romans 6

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students seek change through Jesus Christ and better recognize when those changes are happening.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to recall details about their baptism and perhaps bring a picture if they have one. Some students or their parents may have written a journal entry when students were baptized. It may be interesting for students to read that journal entry or to talk with their parents about details of their baptism, including ones that students may have forgotten.

  • Content to display: A picture of when you were baptized

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider using up to six breakout rooms for the teacher suggestion that accompanies Romans 6:9–14. Divide students into groups and assign each group at least one verse from Romans 6:9–14 to discuss together, after which they will share what they learned with the class. Visit each group briefly to provide personalized help and answer questions as needed. Be sure that students are prepared to share with their classmates before ending the breakout rooms.

Doctrinal Mastery Review 17

Lesson purpose: This lesson will help students deepen their understanding of and explain truths about one or more of the doctrinal mastery passages from the New Testament.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to pay attention to any confusing verses, phrases, or words in their next personal or family scripture study and to come to class prepared to share them.

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider using breakout rooms for students to discuss how they used the different scripture study skills to increase their understanding of the doctrinal mastery scripture passages.
