Winners: The 1978 New Era Writing, Photography, Music, and Art Contest

Congratulations! You’ve once again proved that young Latter-day Saints can write and draw and shoot and compose as well as any young people anywhere. We were especially impressed this year with the poetry and music. Through poetry we met a young man who talks to walls and a young lady who sees her own eyes smiling back at her from a portrait of her grandmother. We’ve also come to know Christ better, both as a skillful carpenter and a loving Savior, master of wood and nails. The music ran from moving hymns and joyous Christmas carols to the sprightly “Bugaloo Blues” duet for piano composed by 12-year-old twins. One young composer bridged the generations by writing music for her grandmother’s poem. The selections you will see on these pages represent only a small fraction of the winning entries, but they will give you an idea of their consistent excellence. We will be using other contest winners throughout the coming year.
