The 1984 New Era Contest Winners:
Tomorrow Remembered
A year ago we invited you to tune up for tomorrow by creating music, art, photography, or literature with a future. Today we offer you some of the fruits of all those yesterdays you spent accepting our invitation. It is a delicious present from your past.
As children of the modern age you know that a computer program can transform a familiar scene into something surprisingly different. We have learned that your unique gift of seeing can do the same thing and do it better. On the wings of your vision, we have traveled far and seen, with wonder, many new and unexpected vistas.
In poetry there were old sneakers laughing through puddles; streams of honey sunshine; swan wings beating white against the sky; a conversation with the frog in the throat; a bird embracing the wind; summer hail rebounding like popcorn; and a home run in the cosmic baseball game. In the article category, an ill-formed bottle became a warm link between a young man and a loving father. Fiction unveiled a bright new lesson on the importance of missionary work.
Photography brought us mountainscapes and cityscapes, the miracle of a rose, and the intimate world of a girl and her dog. Art offered a glimpse into a human soul through a sensitive portrait.
A hint of the glory awaiting those whose eye is single to the glory of God shone through the song category, and the winning hymn spread before us the sweet land of prayer.
Unfortunately, in these few pages, we can only share with you a few of the interior landscapes we saw in judging the contest, but we will try to find a place for more of them throughout the year. We hope what you read and see here will help make your own future a place well worth the journey.
