Bedtime Story
Mother,
How many times have you told me
that it is the
little things
that are most important?
I won’t always remember the words
you spoke
as proof of your love.
Instead,
I’ll remember
the times you changed my sheets
for me
when I came home late.
It’s not that I couldn’t do it.
But it was the thought that
someone
cared enough
loved enough
to do it for me,
knowing that I love
a cool breeze
through an open window
underneath clean sheets.
Thanks for everything else
too,
but thank you for clean sheets.
