“I’m not as talented as my sister. How can I feel less jealous or inferior?” New Era, May 2015, 48
I’m not as talented as my sister. How can I feel less jealous or inferior?
First of all, try to avoid comparisons. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, has said: “We spend so much time and energy comparing ourselves to others—usually comparing our weaknesses to their strengths. …
“… Be thankful for all the small successes in your home, your family relationships, your education … , your Church participation and personal improvement. … These successes may seem tiny to you and they may go unnoticed by others, but God notices them and they are not small to Him” (“Forget Me Not,” Ensign, Nov. 2011, 120).
Study the scriptures and pray to Heavenly Father to discover your true worth. Ask Him to help you find out what you can do to bless and enrich the lives of others. Also, try not to define “talent” or “gift” too narrowly, thinking only of musical, athletic, or academic achievements. There are many, many more gifts that God can bless you with than these. For more on discovering and developing your talents, see Elder Mervyn B. Arnold of the Seventy, “Where Am I?” New Era, Dec. 2014, 34–37.
