I think being cool matters too much to me. How can I worry less about it?

When you say you want to worry less about being cool, you probably mean you don’t want to care so much about what certain people think of you or whether you’re upholding a certain image. That’s good. It means you’ve probably seen through that kind of “coolness” and realized how empty, fleeting, and changeable it is. You want to care more about pleasing God than pleasing other people (see D&C 3:7), you want to be a more genuine person, and you want to focus more on things that are real and enduring.

First, you can pray to Heavenly Father “with all the energy of heart” for charity (see Moroni 7:48). This “pure love of Christ … endureth forever” (Moroni 7:47). With this love, you will “fear not what man can do; for perfect love casteth out all fear” (Moroni 8:16). This love helps you develop empathy for others (to feel what they’re feeling), to treat them with kindness, and to serve them. So, rather than focusing on how they view you, you’ll be seeing them as God sees them.

And here’s the interesting part. If you start seeing people in this way and are sincere, friendly, and kind toward them, guess what? That’s when they’ll really think you’re cool—in a much better sense of that word than you thought before. Now, how cool is that?
