Step by Step

Record Aaronic Priesthood Ordinations

Policy and Principles

“The bishop oversees the conferral of the Aaronic Priesthood and ordinations to the offices of deacon, teacher, and priest” (General Handbook, 38.2.9). The bishop or an assigned counselor interviews brethren who are to be ordained deacons or teachers to determine if they are worthy. The bishop interviews brethren who are to be ordained priests. Before interviewing a young man for priesthood ordination, a member of the bishopric obtains permission from the young man’s parent or guardian.

If a member is found worthy in an interview, the person who conducts the interview signs the Aaronic Priesthood Ordination Record, and the bishop or one of his counselors presents the member in sacrament meeting for a sustaining vote from the congregation.

“A priest or Melchizedek Priesthood holder may ordain a brother to the office of deacon, teacher, or priest. He must be authorized by the bishop. The bishop or someone he designates must be present.

To participate in an Aaronic Priesthood ordination, a person must be a priest or Melchizedek Priesthood holder” (General Handbook 18.10.2).

After an Aaronic Priesthood ordination, the ward clerk ensures that the Aaronic Priesthood Ordination Record is complete and he records the ordination. The clerk also prepares an ordination certificate. The bishop signs the certificate, and the bishop or the clerk gives it to the member.
