Praying for each other is a common practice in many faith traditions, including the practice of praying in groups for those in need.
The scriptures teach of the power of praying for each other. During His ministry, Jesus Christ taught, “Pray in your families unto the Father, always in my name, that your wives and your children may be blessed” (3 Nephi 18:21). The New Testament teaches that we should “pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of [the righteous] availeth much” (James 5:16).
The Book of Mormon prophet Alma taught “ye must pour out your souls in your closets, and your secret places, and in your wilderness. Yea, and when you do not cry unto the Lord, let your hearts be full, drawn out in prayer unto him continually for your welfare, and also for the welfare of those who are around you” (Alma 34:26–27).
For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this practice is part of temple work and worship. The Savior taught that “My house shall be a house of prayer” (Matthew 21:13), and this teaching is observed in LDS temples—the Lord’s House—today.
When members of the Church become aware of those in need, whether that be because of illness, afflictions, or other challenges, they are invited to place the names of those people on the temple prayer roll. As members participate in temple ordinances, they come together in a prayer circle and unite their faith in behalf of those individuals. Prayer rolls are a special way for Latter-day Saints to follow the Savior’s teachings to pray for each other as they pray in temples around the world.
Requesting that a person’s name be added to an LDS temple’s prayer roll is a simple process. Church members can submit names to prayer rolls by visiting the information page of any temple. On the page, simply click on the prayer roll link. You may then enter the names of up to five individuals per request. Names submitted to a temple prayer roll remain on the list for two weeks.
Names can also be added to the prayer roll using the Member Tools mobile app. Under the Temples section of the app, select Prayer Roll to submit up to five names. The names will then be sent to the temple. Additionally, you may submit names by calling the temple directly. (View full temple list)
Adding an individual’s name to the LDS temple prayer roll invites not only your own faith, but also the faith of hundreds of other temple patrons in behalf of those who are in need.
