The Apostle John was known as the “disciple whom Jesus loved.”1 Jesus loved all of His apostles, of course, but John apparently had a special connection with Him.
So maybe it’s no surprise that in John’s epistles, which are only seven short chapters and a few pages long, he uses some form of the word “love” more than 60 times.
Here are a few of John’s simple, beautiful teachings:
- “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love” (1 John 4:8).
- “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son” (1 John 4:10).
- “Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another” (1 John 4:11).
- “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear” (1 John 4:18).
- “We love him, because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19).
- “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments” (1 John 5:3).
There are many other in these chapters, too. Which of John’s statements about God’s love do you find most powerful? How can you feel that love more in your life?
A Heartfelt Goal
Maybe now would be a good time to set a goal related to love—like seeking to feel it from God, or sharing it with others!
