What Causes Emotional Challenges?
Understanding that can be empowering!

The July magazine includes articles about emotional wellness and resilience. Going along with that, we’ll be sharing lots of tips about emotional health throughout the month!

Today’s pro tip is this: Think about the different things that influence your emotions. Some we have control over, and others we don’t. Here are some examples.

Biological and Physiological Factors

  • Genetics
  • Illness or injury
  • Diet and nutrition
  • Level of physical activity
  • Drugs or medication
  • Seasonal weather
  • Chemical or hormonal changes

Psychological and Life Events

  • Life transitions
  • Changes to routines or traditions
  • Death or loss

Psychological and Social Interactions

  • Abuse
  • Conflict
  • Loneliness and isolation
  • Social pressures
  • Betrayal or broken trust

Spiritual Circumstances

  • Consequences of our own sins
  • Repercussions for the sins of others
  • Sadness from living in a troubled world

Understanding what is influencing our emotions can help us better cope with them. It can also help us be more compassionate toward those who struggle with intense feelings.

Whether you can control the initial events leading to certain emotions or not, you can always learn to draw closer to God. He can guide you toward inner peace no matter how crazy life gets!

What Resonates?

Does anything from the list above stand out? How have you seen those factors affect your life?

This is part of an ongoing series about emotional resilience, adapted from this manual.
