Activity: Study and Apply the Words of the Prophets

11/16/19 | 1 min read

Purpose

Help youth study and apply the teachings of the prophet and the Apostles to their own lives.

Activity Suggestion

For this activity, youth can prepare for general conference by reviewing what was said in previous sessions during a game of conference bingo.

Prior to the activity, prepare a series of video clips or quotes from the last general conference. Print out or create blank bingo sheets such as the one found here. You may want to bring enough writing or marking utensils for all the youth as well as small objects youth can use to mark the squares.

Ask youth to fill out their own bingo sheets with the names of the prophet and all the Apostles, or they could fill out the squares with potential topics that general conference talks might address. Small objects may be used to mark which names or topics have come up.

Before getting started with the game, discuss why the Church is led by living prophets and apostles and why it is important to listen to and follow their words (see Ephesians 4:11–14).

Then, show one of the prepared video clips of a general conference talk, or read a quote. Allow youth to guess the name of the speaker or the topic being discussed before bingo squares are marked off.

Each time a group member guesses an answer correctly, members of the group may mark off the square or squares that accurately represent the quote, topic, or speaker. Whoever gets a complete row marked first will win bingo.

Play as many rounds as you have time for.

Please adapt activities as necessary to ensure all individuals are able to participate, belong, and contribute.

Adaptation Ideas

    • Organize a general conference relay race in which youth are separated into two teams to complete a series of physical activities. Each person on either team must complete a physical activity (such as racing to a finish line or completing an obstacle) and answer a question related to general conference before the next team member is able to start the next part of the race. The team to complete all the activities and correctly answer all the questions before the other wins the relay race.
    • Play a modified game of hot potato. Ask youth to stand in a circle. Then, ask one person to throw a hacky-sack or ball to another youth in the circle. When someone catches the ball, they share with the group something they learned from a recent general conference or something they like about a General Authority who spoke. The game continues until everyone has had a chance to share and as long as the group wants to keep playing.

        Discussion

Encourage youth to talk about how what they are learning can help them and others grow closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Discussions can take place before, during, or after the activity and should last just a few minutes. You could ask questions like the following:

        • Why is it important to know what prophets have said?
        • What are some things you can do to follow the words of the prophets?
        • Can you think of any examples of when people you know followed the words of the prophets and were blessed?
