FSY Conference Accessibility

For dietary, disability, medical, and other needs

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sponsors FSY conferences to help strengthen testimonies of the Savior, Jesus Christ, give youth opportunities to meet new people, develop friendships, and make positive changes in their lives.  The Church wants to make an FSY conference experience available to as many youth as reasonably possible.

FSY conferences are five-day programs for youth turning 14 to 18 where they participate at host university and college campuses or other locations, each with its own independently established legal and safety requirements, beyond those imposed by the Church. Youth stay overnight in campus housing with roommates of the same biological sex, away from parents, and local ward and stake leaders. Each session generally has between 150 and 1,500 youth participating in gospel-centered activities. In-person FSY may not work for everyone, so in many places other options are available, including Virtual FSY or in-person FSY without staying overnight.

FSY conferences can be demanding physically, mentally, behaviorally, and emotionally. FSY activities include indoor and outdoor presentations, personal study, group activities, outdoor games, and dancing. At some campuses, the walking distance to and from activity locations is long (potentially up to two miles). See the Schedule for details regarding activities youth participate in at FSY. Reviewing the schedule prior to FSY, and the types of activities that take place, may aid youth in having a positive experience.

Young adult counselors work with approximately 10 youth and are trained in FSY program activities and youth protection principles. FSY staff, including Wellness Coordinators, are not trained or qualified to provide assistance in holding or administering prescription medication; giving reminders about taking medication; addressing mental, emotional, or behavioral conditions; or fulfilling the basic personal needs of participants such as dressing, grooming, toileting, showering, or feeding at an in-person FSY session. FSY staff are not permitted to provide one-to-one support for youth regarding medical, mental, or behavioral health needs. For youth who need assistance beyond that available at in-person FSY, please see the Virtual FSY page.

Request an Accommodation

See the instructions below for how to request each accommodation listed. Submitting a request does not guarantee it will be approved or provided, as each request is evaluated based on campus, staffing, program, and other limitations. You can submit your request during pre-registration or registration. If the need arises or changes after you have registered, please go to your FSY Dashboard and select the appropriate section to make changes to the account. Please also email FSYAccommodations@ChurchofJesusChrist.org to alert us of the new request. Unless otherwise noted below, requests should be submitted at least 45 days prior to the start of your session, to ensure that your request can be reviewed in time to plan and arrange for an accommodation.

Special Dietary Needs

Dairy-free, nut-free, gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options are available at most campuses. Other dietary needs may also be accommodated depending on the campus. When you pre-register or register, please complete the “Dietary Needs and Food Allergies” section under the Medical Information header to request special meals. Please note, third-party host campuses provide the meals at FSY sessions. Failure to timely request a dietary accommodation may prevent FSY's and the campus' ability to grant a dietary accommodation.

Youth and/or parents can meet with Wellness Coordinators during check-in to learn where special meals will be available throughout the session.

Check Out Each Night

The FSY conference schedule is carefully crafted to benefit you to the greatest extent possible; therefore, you are encouraged to attend each day’s activities as much as you’re able. You can be checked out each night by an adult if that best fits your needs, so that you can more fully participate during the day.

To arrange for checking out each night, please follow the steps listed under “Check In/Out” below.

Refrigerator for Medical or Dietary Needs

When you pre-register or register, please complete the “Medical Accommodations” section under the Medical Information header to submit your request for a refrigerator for medical or dietary needs. An email will be sent with the status of your request.

Medical Equipment

FSY conferences cannot provide any medical equipment such as wheelchairs, shower chairs, crutches, etc.

Prescription Medication Administration

FSY conference staff cannot administer prescription medications. As such, if you cannot self-administer, you must be checked out by an adult that can help you, and then checked back in. To arrange for this, please follow the steps listed under "Check In/Out" below.

Preferred Roommate

Two youth of the same biological sex at birth, that are registered for the same session, may request to be linked as roommates, up to Sunday at 11:59 pm local time to the session, two weeks before their session begins. See “How Can I Request a Roommate?” on the Frequently Asked Questions page for instructions to submit this request.

Service Animal

When you pre-register or register, please complete the “Medical Accommodations” section to submit your service animal request. You must also email copies of the following documents for your service animal to FSYAccommodations@ChurchofJesusChrist.org:

  • Clean Bill of Health
  • Current Vaccination Record
  • Any state or local certifications, or registration documents

An email will be sent with the status of your request.

Schoolwork at Session

Some youth may need to complete schoolwork or join summer classes while at their FSY session. Youth may be able to complete schoolwork during free time.

If youth cannot do schoolwork during free time, it is recommended that youth check out and go with a parent/guardian, or adult designated by parent/guardian, off campus if they need to miss any FSY activities. Any different accommodation for schoolwork will need to be requested at least 45 days prior to the start of the session.

Please arrange check outs by following the steps listed under “Check In/Out” below.

To arrange for checking in or out, please do the following any time before your session begins:

For country-specific policies about accessibility, see the information below.

United States

We strive to make reasonable accommodations with respect to dietary, disability, medical, and other needs. However, because the majority of FSY staff are young adult, summer-seasonal staff and are not trained professionals, it is possible that an accommodation reasonable in other settings may not be reasonable for your participation in FSY.

Please note that the Church provides many additional opportunities for spiritual growth that may better serve your individual needs in the event an accommodation cannot be made for you to attend FSY. You can learn more about Church youth programming here. The Church also has a disability resources page.

Youth participating in in-person FSY must be able to:

  1. Take care of their basic personal needs (examples listed above) and independently participate with little, if any, one-on-one support.
  2. Hold and administer prescription medication independently.
  3. Follow basic instructions.
  4. Act respectfully toward others.
  5. Independently and safely reside overnight with youth of the same sex.
  6. Navigate campus when not under direct supervision.
  7. Follow the standards found on FSY Conference Standards and Policies.
  8. Otherwise safely participate in FSY activities.
