Memorize References and Key Scripture Phrases

Remembering scripture references and what they teach can bless your life in many ways. This lesson is intended to help you memorize multiple scripture references and key scripture phrases from the final 12 doctrinal mastery passages in the Book of Mormon.

Memorizing

Read the following statement by Elder Richard G. Scott (1928–2015) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles regarding the importance of memorizing scriptures:

Create a set of memory cards you can use throughout the year. If needed, use the following instructions to help you create your memory cards:

Step 1: Create 12 cards

Using an entire side of a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle of the paper to create two columns. Then draw two horizontal lines across the paper to create three boxes of equal size in each column, giving you a total of six boxes. See the following image for an example of what your page should look like:

Turn the paper over and do the same on that side. Repeat this process on a separate piece of paper to create the 12 boxes you need.

On one side of each of your papers, in each box write a scripture reference from the chart. In addition to the scripture reference, you might consider drawing a simple picture on this side of your papers that would help you remember the key scripture phrase. While the drawing should help you remember the key scripture phrase, it should also show the proper reverence and respect for the sacred nature of the scripture passage.

Step 2: Write the doctrinal mastery scripture references on one side

On one side of your two papers, write a scripture reference from the chart in each box. In addition to the scripture reference, you could also draw a simple picture that would help you remember the key scripture phrase.

Step 3: Write the key scripture phrases on the other side

Flip your papers over, and write in each box the key scripture phrase that matches the scripture reference on the opposite side.

Step 4: Cut out your cards

Cut each of the boxes you created into cards.

Using your memory cards

Be creative in using your memory cards. Choose one of the following ideas, or come up with one of your own. You may also choose to use the resources available on the doctrinal mastery app.

• Quiz yourself: Hold the memory cards so you can see only the reference or only the key scripture phrase. Try saying the corresponding key scripture phrase or the corresponding reference. Repeat this several times with each reference and corresponding phrase.

• Matching activity: Partner with someone. Have one person place his or her cards with the reference face up and the other place his or her cards with the key scripture phrase face up. Match the key scripture phrases to the corresponding references by placing the card with the key scripture phrase on top of the reference card.
