I. Introduction

As young people, we live in a world where technology is a big part of our lives. It can be easy to get lost in the endless scroll, the constant notifications, and the addictive nature of technology. But as disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to use technology intentionally and positively. In this lesson, we will learn how we can take charge of our technology use and use it in a way that honors God.

II. The Benefits and Costs of Technology

Benefit

  • The Church uses technology to communicate globally and spread the gospel.

  • Technology gives us access to the world’s collective knowledge and fits right in our pocket.

Costs

  • The cost of technology is our time and attention, or worse, squandering opportunity and blessings.

  • If we are not careful, we can become sidetracked by something not worth our attention, or even diversion from our covenants with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

  • Philippians 4:8

  • Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

III. Challenges of Technology

Are you broken if you find it hard to stop using technology? Are you just spiritually weak? Of course not! It’s totally normal to use technology, but controlling it can be a legitimate struggle. You’re up against science, brain chemicals, competitive industries vying for our attention—it’s not a fair fight.

The “Bliss Point” of Technology

  • Technology is a tool that gives us access to the world’s collective knowledge and can be used for good.

  • The more attention we give to technology, the more the creators of technology are compensated.

  • Researchers and designers use techniques to keep us engaged and satisfied with technology, similar to the food industry’s “bliss point.”

  • Heavenly Father and our Savior understand our struggles with technology and will strengthen us.

  • 2 Corinthians 12:9

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Overcoming the “Bliss Point”

  • Recognize that technology has its own “bliss point” that guides our emotions and body chemicals.

  • It’s normal to struggle with technology, and we’re up against science, brain chemicals, and competitive industries vying for our attention.

  • We can take control of our technology by asking ourselves purposeful questions, making a plan, and pausing when necessary.

  • Being mindful of the content we consume and creating technology-free areas in our homes can also help us overcome the “bliss point” of technology.

  • Matthew 26:41

  • Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Recognizing where limits on technology use are needed and taking steps to overcome the desire to over-use or even abuse technology can create a healthy relationship with technology. Remember, we control our technology, it doesn’t control us.

IV. Take Charge of Technology

A. Purpose: Intentionally using technology to learn and create.

  • Colossians 3:23

  • And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.

  • Ask yourself questions like “Why am I using my device right now?” and “Do I feel good about what I’m doing?”

You can intentionally use technology for good by sending a positive message, listening to peaceful music, and creating your own content. What other ways can you use technology for good purposes?

B. Plan: Planning ahead for better choices.

  • Proverbs 16:3

  • Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.

  • Ask yourself questions like “What is my plan for using my device?” and “What sign am I showing God with how I use my time?”

You can use technology intentionally by giving yourself a daily limit for screen time, following and contacting only close family and friends, having device-free areas at home, setting up a family charging station, and using a filter. What other ways can you plan ahead to make better choices when using technology?

C. Pause: Taking a break when needed.

  • Ask yourself questions like “Am I avoiding content I know is not right or purposeful?” and “Did I feel the Spirit leave?”

You can use technology intentionally by putting your device down and stepping away, praying for strength, and talking to someone. How else can you safeguard yourself when using technology?

V. Group Discussion:

Ask the following questions and discuss with the group about experiences and taking charge of technology use.

  1. What are the biggest challenges you face in managing technology?

  2. How do you feel when you are using technology for a long time?

  3. How do you know when it’s time to take a break?

  4. How does social media impact your self-esteem and sense of connection with others?

  5. What are some ways you can use technology to positively impact your mental health?

  6. How do you balance schoolwork and technology use? What strategies have worked for you in the past?

  7. What are some potential risks associated with technology use, (such as cyberbullying or addiction)? How can you protect yourself from those risks?

  8. How can you use technology to learn new skills or pursue your interests rather than just consuming content?

  9. How do you communicate with your parents or guardians about your technology use? How do they help you set boundaries?

  10. What are some strategies for using technology responsibly, such as avoiding multitasking or setting time limits?

  11. What are some ways you can use technology to connect with others in a meaningful way, such as participating in online communities or supporting causes you care about?

VI. Conclusion

As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to use technology intentionally and positively. While technology has many benefits, it also has costs, such as our time and attention. We need to be mindful of the “bliss point” of technology and take control of our technology use by asking purposeful questions, making a plan, and being mindful of the content we consume. By taking charge of how we use technology, we can use it in a way that honors God and brings us and others closer to Him.
