One of the ways The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints cares for those in need is by helping individuals to become self-reliant. This work includes identifying and providing tools and services that help individuals find employment and be successful in work.

Employment Support
As followers of Jesus Christ, we believe that helping people become more self-reliant increases their ability to make choices for themselves and serve others in their community. The Church has many services and resources to help individuals find jobs, start businesses, and progress in their careers.

Employment Services
We believe that no one should have to go through a job search alone. Anyone can visit employment.ChurchofJesusChrist.org or go to an employment center for help finding a job, progressing in their career, starting a business, and more. Some of the in-person and virtual services available include one-on-one coaching with employment advisors, job search support groups, workshops, and more. These services are provided by employment experts and employment support missionaries who can help with everything from résumé writing and interview skills to networking.

Humanitarian Center
The Humanitarian Center is the location where Deseret Industries donations are sorted and shipped to help people all over the world. In addition to preparing emergency supplies and kits for those in need, the Humanitarian Center serves as a training ground for individuals wanting to develop employable skills and learn self-reliance. These trainees at the Humanitarian Center are assigned job coach missionaries who teach them work and life skills, and the trainees are given the opportunity to work, earn money, and learn English as a part of their workday.
Humans of Deseret Industries (H.O.D.I.): Springville
Deseret Industries
Deseret Industries (DI) is a thrift store that helps Church members and others overcome barriers to employment. These barriers might include physical disabilities, mental health struggles, criminal records, or a history of addiction. DI provides a safe place for these individuals to learn new skills through on-the-job training, meet with development counselors who help them set career goals, and receive financial assistance for education and training.

Transitional Services
Full-time employees and service missionaries in the Church’s Transitional Services offices focus on providing temporal, mental, and spiritual aid to a wide range of individuals—including those exiting correctional facilities, women rescued from trafficking, veterans, and individuals who have recently immigrated, fled their home country, or experienced homelessness. Transitional Services connects these individuals with the resources and services that they need, including employment help.

Members of the Church volunteer as employment service missionaries who coach individuals, provide encouragement, and teach effective job search skills.

How Can I Get Involved?

There are many things you can do to help someone looking for a job. For example, you can:

  • Practice interview skills with a friend or family member seeking employment.
  • Mentor job seekers at a local nonprofit.
  • Share job opportunities you are aware of with those you know.
  • Volunteer to serve as an employment missionary.
