Sister Sonne Dies

Sister Leona B. Ballantyne Woolley Sonne, 84, wife of Elder Alma Sonne, Assistant to the Council of the Twelve, passed away in a Logan, Utah, hospital on August 31, 1971, following an extended period of illness.

She was born September 21, 1886, at Draper, Utah, to Richard Alando and Mary Ann Stewart Ballantyne. Her paternal grandfather was the founder of the LDS Sunday School.

She married Kenneth R. Woolley March 4, 1911. Following his passing she was a housemother to a Utah State University sorority for several years. She was married to Elder Sonne December 21, 1943. On October 11, 1946, he was called to preside over the European Mission. She accompanied him to London, where she presided over the Relief Societies in Europe during the period of rebuilding the thirteen European missions immediately following World War II. They were released November 10, 1949.

The Sonnes maintained their gracious home in Logan, with Elder Sonne commuting the eighty-five miles to Church headquarters at Salt Lake City for his labors there.

She is survived by Elder Sonne, a son and a daughter (another son preceded her in death), and the five children of Elder Sonne. There are twenty-two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Four sisters also survive.

Funeral services were held in the Logan 15th Ward chapel, Friday, September 3. Interment was in Logan.
