The Gift of the Holy Ghost

Often in a Fast Meeting, a boy or girl eight years of age and older who has been baptized (and sometimes an older person who has been baptized) is invited to come to the front with a father or someone else holding the Melchizedek Priesthood. The one being confirmed is seated on a chair and the priesthood holder saying the confirmation prayer and other worthy men lay their hands upon the person’s head and he is confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The words used in the prayer are simple but very important: “… confirm you a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and say unto you, receive the Holy Ghost.”

The scriptures tell us that everyone must be baptized and must receive the gift of the Holy Ghost so that they may return to live again with our Heavenly Father.

The Holy Ghost is a very special and sacred Personage. He is a member of the Godhead. But while Heavenly Father and Jesus have bodies of flesh and bones as we do, the Holy Ghost has only the form or shape of a man. He is a spirit who can speak to us so quietly that we can listen to Him without hearing any sound.

The Holy Ghost can tell us what is right and what is wrong. He can help our testimonies continue to grow. He can guide us away from danger, remind us of things we should remember, and bring comfort to us when we are troubled. But each of us must keep the commandments of our Heavenly Father and learn to listen to that quiet voice within before we can enjoy these blessings.

The Holy Ghost will help us throughout our lives to share the gospel with others if we seek His help. He will also bear witness to those who are honestly searching to find out if the gospel is true.

When a man, through the power of the Melchizedek Priesthood, says to you, “… receive the Holy Ghost,” you are receiving a precious gift, one that can help you throughout all of your life. Think of its meaning when in Sunday School or Primary you sing

He will lead me through the night,

Direct me, protect me

And give my soul His light.

Listen, listen, the Holy Ghost will whisper.

Listen, listen to the still small voice.
