“Candle Holder,” Friend, Dec. 1977, 11
Candle Holder
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
1 cup water
Combine salt and flour in large bowl. Add water slowly, mixing as you pour. Knead until dough is smooth (about eight minutes). Store in plastic bag.
-
Make ball of aluminum foil about the size of a baseball. Press candle firmly into the top of the foil ball until it stands by itself.
-
Roll part of dough on piece of wax paper until 1/4″ thick. Use a spade or leaf-shape cookie cutter to cut out about a dozen shapes.
-
Add a vein-like appearance to each leaf by making light indentations with blade of butter knife.
-
Apply leaves around the base of candle and aluminum foil ball, overlapping as you go. Moisten edges with water to hold in place.
-
Roll out two long pieces of dough for the top. Braid or twist together, moisten with water, and attach. Add smaller leaves and stars. Remove candle, and bake at 325° forabout 30 minutes or until light brown. Allow to cool, then varnish.
-
The extra dough will make attractive decorations for the tree by using different Christmas cookie cutter shapes.
