“Winter Fence,” Friend, Jan. 1979, inside back cover
Winter Fence
The fence post wears a crown of white
And, growing ever higher,
It stands at firm attention,
Clothed in its royal attire.
A king in finest ermine
No more proud could be,
Standing at the corner
For passersby to see.
I wonder, does the threat of thaw
Fill its heart with dread
That it must doff a royal cap
And show its wooden head?
