Lehi’s Warning
Adapted from Book of Mormon Stories for Beginning Readers (PBIC0325)
Lehi was a good man who lived with his family in Jerusalem 600 years before Jesus Christ was born. (1 Ne. 1:4.)
He and his wife, Sariah, had four sons—Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and Nephi. (1 Ne. 2:5.)
Nephi later wrote the story of his family on metal plates that were thin like pages in a book. (1 Ne. 1:1.)
Many people living in Jerusalem at that time were wicked. God sent prophets to tell them to repent, but the evildoers would not listen. (1 Ne. 1:4)
One night, in a vision, Lehi saw God and he heard angels singing. (1 Ne. 1:8.)
God told Lehi that Jerusalem would be destroyed and that some people would be killed with swords. Others would be made slaves in Babylon. (1 Ne. 1:13.)
Lehi told the people about his vision and warned them to repent. (1 Ne. 1:18.)
But the wicked people did not believe Lehi, and they laughed at him. Others were angry and wanted to kill him. (1 Ne. 1:19, 20.)
God spoke to Lehi in a dream and told him to take his family and leave Jerusalem. (1 Ne. 2:2.)
Lehi obeyed God. He and his family packed food and tents and went into the wilderness. (1 Ne. 2:4.)
After three days, they came to a river and put up their tents. Later they would build a ship and sail to a promised land. (1 Ne. 2:6; 1 Ne. 17:8.)
