Sharing Time:

Search the Scriptures

Search the scriptures; for … they … testify of me (John 5:39).

When President Spencer W. Kimball was a youngster, he heard a speaker in church ask the congregation, “How many of you have read the Bible through?” A feeling of guilt spread over young Spencer as he realized that he had never read the Bible through. As he left the chapel, he was determined to read the entire Bible and promised himself, “I will. I will. I will.” Arriving home, the youth found his Bible and read until very late that evening. And within a year he had read the entire Bible.

You can make the same decision that President Kimball made as a youth and begin reading faithfully until you reach the same goal. Remember that it is important for each member of the Church to read all the standard works—Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, and Bible—all the way through.

Our scriptures contain the most exciting stories ever written. And the best part of all is that these stories are true! Once you start reading the scriptures, you will want to continue your study of them the rest of your life. Here is a bookmark that you can make to keep your place in whichever book you are reading.

Instructions:

  1. Write your name on bookmark.

  2. Cut out bookmark and fold along center line.

  3. Glue wrong sides together and punch or cut hole at top.

  4. Cut two pieces of yarn or narrow ribbon 6″ (15 cm) long. Fold in half to make four strands.

  5. Push folded parts through hole in bookmark to form loop. Pull ends through loop (see illustration).

  6. Begin reading scriptures, and use bookmark to keep your place. Write on bookmark your start and finish dates for each volume. You might be surprised at how soon you can read all of the standard works if you will begin now and read some every day.

Sharing Time Ideas

  1. Using references associated with Scriptures in Bible Topical Guide, plan scripture chase for older children. Let each child explain meaning of scripture he finds.

  2. Sing songs like “The Book of Mormon” (More Songs for Children, page 32).

  3. See “Gratitude for the scriptures” (Friend, November 1983, page 11).
