Kitchen Krafts:
Brunch for Mother
(Note: These recipes are for one serving only; make as many as needed.)
Gold Holed Sandwich
butter/margarine
2 slices bread
1 slice cheddar cheese
1 egg
1 tablespoon cooked, chopped ham, sausage, or bacon
-
Spread the butter on both sides of each slice of bread. Place a slice of cheese between the bread slices.
-
With a round cookie cutter or knife, cut a hole 2″ (5 cm) in diameter in the center of the sandwich. Remove the center.
-
Warm a skillet to medium heat. Using a spatula, place the sandwich in the heated skillet. Crack open an egg and pour the egg in the hole, then sprinkle the meat on top of it.
-
Cook until the egg is set and cooked on the bottom and the bread is toasted on the bottom. Then flip the sandwich over and cook the other side until done. Remember to cook the cutout hole piece, too!
Chunky Apple Slosh
1 apple, peeled, cored, and chopped
1/2 banana, peeled and chopped
1 teaspoon raisins
1 teaspoon chopped nuts
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Mix all the ingredients together; chill in the refrigerator.
Yogurt Shiver
1 container (8 ounces/227 g) fruit-flavored yogurt, frozen
1/4 cup orange juice
1 1/2 tablespoons powdered milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
sugar (optional)
3 ice cubes
-
Dip the container of frozen yogurt in hot water for a few seconds. Open it and slip the yogurt onto a cutting board. Cut the yogurt into three pieces and put them into a blender.
-
Add the orange juice, powdered milk, vanilla, sugar to taste (optional), and one ice cube; blend together. Add two more ice cubes and blend until the ice is crushed.
Bug Garnishes
To make each “bug,” you will need: • Ladybug—1/2 large strawberry, cut lengthwise (body), and a red grape with a small piece of stem and another piece of stem poked into the grape (head with antennae) • Butterfly—2 orange slices, each cut almost in half so you can twist them (wings); 3 small grapes on a toothpick (body); and a large grape (head), with two toothpicks poked in it (antennae) • Winged beetle—4 apple or pear slices (wings) and 2 cherries with stems (antennaed eyes). Follow the pictures to make each bug.
