A Covenant People
(Adapted from a fireside address in Copenhagen, Denmark, 14 June 1996. See Ensign, August 1997, page 3.)
My soul delighteth in the covenants of the Lord (2 Ne. 11:5).
We are a covenant people. The Lord has said that one reason for the Restoration was that His everlasting covenant might be reestablished. We make that covenant when we are baptized.
We also become part of His divine family. All of God’s children are of His family, but there is a special relationship between God and the children of His covenant. Each time we partake of the sacrament, we do it in remembrance of the sacrifice of the Son of God, who gave His life for each of us. We take upon us the name of Jesus Christ and pledge ourselves to keep His commandments, and He pledges with us that He will bless us with His Holy Spirit.
We are a covenant people, and great are the obligations which go with that covenant.
