When people criticize the Church, “start by making sure your words and actions are inspired by love for God and His children” (For the Strength of Youth: A Guide for Making Choices [2022], 33). Focus on Jesus Christ’s divine qualities. Have faith, hope, patience, and love as well as knowledge, wisdom, and compassion.

Beyond that, here are a couple of questions to ask yourself:

Why are they doing it? Knowing what’s motivating people can help you know how to react. Are they honestly seeking truth but have come across negative information? Are they just trying to get a reaction and create contention? Are they trying to defend their own beliefs by attacking ours?

What kind of response would help them or others most? Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In some situations, it may be best for you not to respond at all. Sometimes bearing testimony and showing love are all you need to do. Other times, a more thorough response might be best. If so, remember: “Defend your beliefs with courtesy and with compassion, but defend them” (Jeffrey R. Holland, Apr. 2014 general conference [Ensign or Liahona, May 2014, 9]).
