The Kirtland Safety Society was founded in 1836 as a community bank with the goal to provide credit and raise money for those in Ohio. By August 1837, the bank had been refused a charter by the state of Ohio, and a national financial crisis led to the bank’s collapse. This is one of the original notes issued by the Kirtland Safety Society. Kirtland Safety Society note, 1837, Church History Library.
