How Can We Keep the New and Everlasting Covenant?
Through Jeremiah, the Lord declared that He would “make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah” (Jeremiah 31:31). This promise was fulfilled in our day when the “covenant was revealed again to men on earth by Jesus Christ through the Prophet Joseph Smith. … When people accept the gospel and promise to keep God’s commandments, God covenants to give them the blessings of His new and everlasting covenant.”1
Consider these questions as you study Jeremiah 31:
-
Where will the Lord “write” His law? (see verse 33).
-
What will the Lord do for us if we keep our covenants? (see verse 34).
-
What will the Lord do if we don’t keep His law? (see verses 36–37).
Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught: “The new and everlasting covenant is the gospel of Jesus Christ. In other words, the doctrines and commandments of the gospel constitute the substance of an everlasting covenant between God and man that is newly restored in each dispensation.”2
