This lesson will give you an opportunity to memorize doctrinal mastery references and their key scripture phrases and even memorize entire passages.

We can follow the Savior’s example by memorizing scriptures

the Savior
  • What are some ways we can follow the example of Jesus Christ?

One way we can follow the example of Jesus Christ is by memorizing scriptures. The Savior used memorized scriptures to overcome temptation (see Matthew 4:1–11) and to teach others (see Luke 24:27; 3 Nephi 22).

  • What are some situations in which having scriptures memorized would be helpful?

As you memorize doctrinal mastery scripture passages or key scripture phrases, remember that you are following the example of Jesus Christ.

Think of your own circumstances. Review the chart of doctrinal mastery passages and select one (or a few key scripture phrases) that you feel would be most helpful for you to memorize right now. Consider using one of the following techniques (or the memorization features in the Doctrinal Mastery app) to help you memorize the passage (or phrases) you chose.

  • Write it out: Set a timer for a reasonable amount of time (for example, 30 seconds). Write as much of the passage as you can without looking at the scriptures or chart. Set the timer again and write more. Repeat until you have written the entire scripture passage. You could then try the activity again to see if you can write it in a faster amount of time.

  • First letters: Write in your study journal the full reference and passage you chose. Next to it, write the first letter from each word. Read through the complete passage a few times. Then cover up the passage and try to use only the first letters to repeat the reference and passage (uncovering the full passage as needed). Do this several times until you can repeat the passage from memory.

  • Phrase by phrase: First, separate the reference and passage into several smaller phrases. Then memorize the first phrase in the passage by repeating it or writing it out several times. Then do the same with the second phrase. Repeat this process until you have memorized the entire reference and passage.

Review

  1. Complete the following:

Write a brief note to your teacher. Include the following:

    • The scripture passage or key scripture phrases you worked on memorizing and which memorization methods you used

    • Circumstances you are facing now or will face in the future in which having this passage or key phrases memorized would be helpful

    • Your thoughts on how memorizing scriptures can help you follow the example of Jesus Christ

Look for opportunities to repeat the memorized scripture reference and passage (or key phrases) often.
