Book of Mormon Doctrinal Mastery Review 2

Memorize References and Key Scripture Phrases

Remembering scripture passages and what they teach can help you in many ways. This lesson is intended to help you memorize the scripture references and key scripture phrases for some of the Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passages.

Encouraging doctrinal mastery review activities. Doctrinal mastery review activities help students memorize key scripture phrases. By doing these activities regularly, students can learn these phrases. You may want to encourage your students to continue studying doctrinal mastery passages outside of class.

Student preparation: Invite students to reflect on and be ready to discuss any scripture passages that have helped them in their lives.

Possible Learning Activities

A doctrinal mastery passage lesson may need to be taught in place of this review lesson. Refer to the pacing schedule provided by the area or region director or coordinator to ensure that each doctrinal mastery passage lesson will be taught while seminary is in session.

Using the scriptures to share the gospel

Imagine that one of your friends has questions about some of your beliefs as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including your beliefs about Jesus Christ, our purpose on earth, and God’s commandments. As you think about how you might respond, you decide that you would like to show him scriptures from the Book of Mormon to help answer his questions.

  • Can you think of helpful passages from the Book of Mormon that you could show your friend?

  • How might knowing doctrinal mastery passages and their key scripture phrases help you in situations like this?

Consider asking students if they have ever been in situations like this and to share what their experience was like. Students could draw upon their lesson preparation as part of this discussion.

This lesson can help you memorize the scripture references and key scripture phrases for the doctrinal mastery passages you will study this year. Memorizing these scripture references and phrases can help you in your life and in your efforts to share your beliefs with others. Below is a list of the first 12 Book of Mormon doctrinal mastery passages with their key scripture phrases.

To help you determine how many doctrinal mastery passages to emphasize in this lesson, consider the time available and the needs of the students. Display the following chart so students can refer to it until they have completed their cards.

Memory cards

Adjust the following instructions based on which doctrinal mastery passages will be studied in the lesson. Students who have access to electronic devices could use an app or a program to create the cards. Otherwise, distribute two pieces of paper to each student for this activity.

Take time to create a set of memory cards you can use throughout the year. Put the doctrinal mastery scripture reference on one side of each card and the key scripture phrase on the other side. Create memory cards for all 12 of the doctrinal mastery passages listed in the chart.

If needed, use the following instructions to help you create your memory cards:

Consider displaying the following instructions for students to refer to as they create their memory cards.

Step 1: Create 12 cards

Using an entire side of a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle of the paper to create two columns. Then draw two horizontal lines across the paper to create three boxes of equal size in each column, giving you a total of six boxes. See the following image for an example of what your page should look like:

Turn the paper over and do the same on that side. Repeat this process on a separate piece of paper to create the 12 boxes you need.

Step 2: Write the doctrinal mastery scripture references on one side

On one side of your two papers, write a scripture reference from the chart in each box. In addition to the scripture reference, you could also draw a simple picture that would help you remember the key scripture phrase.

Step 3: Write the key scripture phrases on the other side

Flip your papers over, and write in each box the key scripture phrase that matches the scripture reference on the opposite side.

Step 4: Cut out your cards

Cut each of the boxes you created into cards.

Consider dividing students into pairs to use their cards to begin memorizing some or all of the doctrinal mastery scripture references and key scripture phrases. Students could take turns quizzing one another, use both sets of cards to do a matching game, or come up with another activity.

You could also invite students to read some or all of these doctrinal mastery passages in their scriptures.

  • Which passages and key scripture phrases do you feel would be most helpful for you to have memorized? Why?

  • What are some truths these passages teach about the Savior and His gospel?
