Alma 43–52

Overview

The last part of the book of Alma describes a time of contention and war. When Moroni saw that many of the Nephites began to forget the Lord, he became concerned for the spiritual and physical welfare of his people. He created the title of liberty, and on it he listed important things for his people to always remember. His words inspired them to strengthen their commitment to God. The strategies they used in their wars against the Lamanites can help us develop strategies we can use in our daily battles against Satan.

Prepare to Teach

The following information provides teachers with ideas of what may need to be prepared in advance for each lesson.

Alma 43, 48–50

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students liken the scriptures to themselves to receive the Lord’s protection from the constant and increasing attacks of the adversary.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to study Alma 43:18–21, 37–38, looking for lessons that could help them in their battle against Satan.

  • Content to display: The four steps for likening the scriptures to ourselves

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Display the four steps for likening the scriptures. Let students know in advance that they will use these steps on their own after working through an example as a class. This might encourage them to keep their cameras on and pay attention during the first part of the lesson so that they are prepared to work alone more effectively.

Alma 45–46

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students understand ways they can demonstrate their commitment to God.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to make a list of things that inspire or remind them to keep the commandments of God.

  • Handout:Modern-Day Teachings That Relate to the Title of Liberty

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider displaying each of the statements from general Church leaders so that students can follow along as you read them aloud.

Alma 47–48

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help students resist Satan’s attempts to gain power over them.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to read 2 Nephi 28:7–8, 21–22 and to think of examples of how Satan uses these tactics in our day.

  • Video:O That Cunning Plan of the Evil One” (16:56; watch from time code 0:43 to 2:30)

  • Diagram: Lehonti and Amalickiah at Mount Antipas

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Consider using the whiteboard feature to display the drawing of Lehonti at the top of the mountain. Invite students to do the drawing activity together on the whiteboard. Encourage each of them to participate.

Assess Your Learning 6

Lesson purpose: This lesson is intended to help students evaluate the goals they have set and the growth they have experienced during their recent study of the Book of Mormon.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to come ready to share what they’ve learned or ways they’ve grown spiritually over the past few weeks. It may be helpful to have students review their study journal or notes in their scriptures.

  • Images: Tools used to measure physical health or growth

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: For the section “Explain important truths about the plan of salvation or the role of Jesus Christ,” you could divide the students into two groups and place each group into a breakout room. One group could be assigned to discuss activity 1, and the other could discuss activity 2. After the discussion, a volunteer from each group could summarize their group’s response with the rest of the class.

Doctrinal Mastery Review 15

Lesson purpose: This lesson can help increase students’ understanding and their ability to explain truths found in the doctrinal mastery passages from the Book of Mormon.

  • Student preparation: Invite students to think about something they understand very well, such as a hobby, sport, or school subject. Have them contemplate what has helped them gain such a deep understanding and invite them to share their thoughts.

  • Videos:Come What May, and Love It” (13:29; watch from time code 4:50 to 5:44); “Worthiness Is Not Flawlessness” (10:52; watch from time code 0:00 to 0:27)

  • Content to display: “Book of Mormon Doctrinal Mastery: Alma–Moroni”

  • Videoconference teaching suggestion: Before beginning the lesson, consider using the whiteboard feature to write the word misunderstanding and inviting students to share what comes to mind when they think of this word. Then share the statements provided in the lesson. As an alternative, consider sharing a personal experience of a misunderstanding.
